|
| Q. What is recommended for online security on a personal computer? |
|
| A. The first and most important step to take is to ensure your computer and all of the
data stored in it is protected from malicious viruses and worms. To do this, you must have anti-virus software installed on your PC. Additionally, the anti-virus product must be kept up to date. Many people don't realize that anti-virus software is dynamic and must be frequently updated with the most recent virus signature files to ensure protection against the latest creations from cyber vandals. Countless new viruses are launched every month. The worst can spread around the globe in minutes.
Second, installing firewall protection is the second most important step to take in securing your PC. Without a firewall, your computer is operating under an open door policy.
Third, you should use Pest Patrol Anti-Spyware to scan your computer for signs of spyware and remove any spyware that the scan finds. Spyware can slow down your computer and threaten the safety of personal information like usernames, passwords, and bank account numbers. |

|
| Q. What is Spyware? |
|
A. Spyware and adware are non-viral applications (surveillance tools) that are loaded without the user's knowledge and can monitor computer activity including keystroke tracking and capture, email logging, instant message usage and snapshots. Spyware comes in many shapes and sizes: some are simply an annoyance while others threaten security. Here are some common types of spyware:
- Spyware - tracks information about you, your computer, and your surfing habits.
- Adware - displays unwanted advertising that can slow your computer to a crawl.
- Keyloggers - record every keystroke you make, then steal your passwords and other personal data.
- Browser Hijackers - can change your homepage and search results.
- Remote Access Trojans (RATS) - allows attackers to remotely control your computer.

|
| Q. What is a Virus? |
|
A. A computer virus is a form of malicious software – also referred to as malware.
(Malware is a word derived from the combination of the words malicious and software).
The forms of malware that anti-virus solutions protect against include the following. (All of these forms are commonly referred to simply as “viruses”).
- Viruses – a small program that attaches itself to another program or document and
replicates with the potential to cause damage.
- Worms – specifically engineered to make extensive use of email to spread them
rapidly.
- Trojans – programs that pretend to be something harmless but have a damaging or
otherwise malicious intent.
- Zombies– programs that install themselves on machines, and remain dormant until
some external event triggers them into action. Actions could include doing damage, or
stealing your information and sending it to some predefined email account, or opening
up remote control access portals to your machines.

|
| Q. How do anti-virus solutions work? |
|
| A. Anti-virus solutions provide protection by detecting viruses and disabling or otherwise removing them from your system. Detecting viruses is the job of the anti-virus “engine”, which scans your systems, looking for the tell tale signatures of these malicious programs, and once detected, initiates the appropriate action (remove, rename, disable, etc.). |

|
| Q. How does a Firewall Work? |
|
A. A firewall monitors all incoming Internet traffic and allows in only what is known or trusted. The traffic enters through “ports” on your PC. There are over 65,000 ports available under the Internet Protocol. Trying to manually restrict or grant access to each of these would be impossible. Firewall software does this by allowing ports that need to be open and closing off those that do not. It also makes the computer “invisible” on the
Internet so Hackers will have a much harder time finding the PC. |

|
| Q. What damage can viruses cause? |
|
| A. The type of damage they can do varies dramatically. Some of them do a great deal of damage to files, or even destroy the contents of your hard drives. Others install programs intended to corrupt or steal information from your machine. |

|
| Q. How much damage can a Hacker cause? |
|
| A. At a minimum, a Hacker gaining access to a home PC and its data is an affront to personal privacy. In the worse case, it could lead to identity theft, the #1 growing crime in America. It doesn’t take much to become a victim, a lost Social Security number or credit card. Because it’s a relatively new crime, people really aren’t sure how to prevent it, or how to deal with it once they become a victim. The average identity theft victim spends about $800 on out-of-pocket expenses according to Identity Theft Resource Center and 175 hours of personal time recovering your identity. |
